Male Hair Loss
Male pattern baldness is by far the biggest cause of hair loss among men. This is a genetic condition that affects the way the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) behaves in the body after puberty. Men with too much of this hormone and not enough free testosterone experience shorter growth cycles and longer rest cycles with hair growth. This eventually leads to partial or complete baldness. Burns, illness, other scalp trauma, and chemotherapy are other possible reasons for male hair loss.
When a man still has healthy hair follicles on the back of his head, he may be a good candidate for either the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgical hair transplant procedures. FUT and FUE rely on different methods to transfer several healthy hair follicles from the back to the top of the scalp. The reason for this is that hair on the back of your head resists balding much longer than the hair on top. After Doctor McGrath transfers the hair follicles to the balding areas, it falls out within a few weeks to allow for the permanent hair to come in approximately six months after surgery.
Female Hair Loss
Although hereditary factors also come into play when women lose their hair, it’s not nearly as common as it is with men’s hair loss. Some of the other possible causes include compulsive hair pulling, the long-term effects of styling the hair, an autoimmune disorder, stress, hormone imbalances related to pregnancy or menopause, and a variety of health conditions related to alopecia. Since so many possibilities exist, it’s important for Houston area women to contact Daniel McGrath, D.O. for a complete scalp evaluation to learn more about their unique hair loss condition. This is the only way he can determine the best course of treatment. Since women tend to deal with thinning hair rather than areas of complete baldness, a non-surgical approach is often the most appropriate.
